CAMDEN – Subaru of America isn’t expected to move here until sometime next year, but the firm’s already had a change of address.

City Council members voted Tuesday to rename one block of Mount Ephraim Avenue that runs past the construction site for the auto firm’s future headquarters.

The action followed a similar change in June, when council gave a new name to Morgan Street at the future home of a Holtec International manufacturing complex. That stretch of road became Holtec Boulevard between Interstate 676 and the South Jersey Port Corp. complex.

Subaru Drive will run between Admiral Wilson Boulevard and South 11th Street.

Both companies also have received sizable state tax incentives to locate in Camden.

Subaru, which is leaving facilities in Cherry Hill and Pennsauken, obtained a 10-year tax break worth $118 million from the state Economic Development Authority. The EDA provided $260 million in incentives to Holtec.

Subaru has said it will move 500 jobs to Camden and create 100 more over the next decade. Holtec has said it will have 350 workers when its campus opens by mid-2018, with the potential for thousands more.

Camden, where many names reflect local history, previously has changed its street signs to honor residents and dignitaries.

Among other examples, Division Street became Ramona Gonzalez Street in 1997, saluting a community leader who co-founded the city’s San Juan Bautista parade. That same year, council changed Van Hook Street to Carl Miller Boulevard to honor a longtime funeral director who had died a few years earlier.

The city, where a major downtown thoroughfare honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (most will know it as Mickle Boulevard), also has named streets after songwriter-producer Kenneth Gamble, boxer Jersey Joe Walcott and former Mayor Gwendolyn Faison, among others.
