Frank J. Suttill, born on September 8, 1893, in Pennsylvania, made significant contributions to Camden County’s political and civic life. His family relocated to Camden County in 1902, marking the beginning of his long association with the area.

Suttill’s political career was notable for breaking new ground in local politics. He became the first Democrat ever elected to the position of County Clerk in Camden County, a significant achievement given the political landscape of the time. However, his political aspirations also saw setbacks; he ran unsuccessfully for the New Jersey State Assembly in 1926 and for Register of Deeds in the county in 1930.

During the 1930 census, Suttill was residing in Whitman Park at 1121 Sheridan Street with his wife and two children. At that time, he was working as a sheet metal worker, reflecting his diverse skills and capabilities.

Suttill’s role in public service expanded significantly in 1940 when he was appointed to the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of the City of Camden. Later, he served as its Executive Director, playing a pivotal role in the construction of key public housing projects, including the William Stanley Ablett Village and Chelton Terrace in the early 1940s. These projects were crucial in providing affordable housing options in Camden.

In 1940, Suttill was elected as County Clerk for Camden, a position he held for the remainder of his life. This role underscored his commitment to public service and his effectiveness as a public administrator.

By 1950, Suttill had moved to 284 Park Avenue in Collingswood, NJ, and later to 451 Magill Avenue in the same town. He lived there until his passing in October 1970. Frank J. Suttill’s life and career in Camden County were marked by his dedication to public service, his pioneering role as a Democrat in local politics, and his contributions to the development of public housing in Camden.
